Emma Watson, who stars as Belle in the upcoming remake of Beauty and the Beast, is aware of the criticism that currently surrounds the movie.

While the classic tale is a generally beloved story, some folks are having issues with Belle falling in love and having sexual intercourse with a beast, which in their eyes, makes this an act of zoophilia.

Some critics have voiced their opinion on the subject, saying Beauty and the Beast portrays an unhealthy sexual relationship between a human and an animal.

However, Emma Watson doesn’t believe this is applicable criticism, saying she took those concerns into consideration before she signed on to star in the live-action reboot of the 1991 animated feature.

“It’s such a good question and it’s something I really grappled with in the beginning — the kind of beastiality question about this story,” she said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

In the film, Belle is captured by a fearsome Beast and is imprisoned in his castle. After the two spend some time with each other they ultimately fall in love, which breaks the curse that was casted upon the castle and its inhabitants, turning them back into their human-forms.

Watson said because Beast is technically a human, it doesn’t really count as ‘beastiality’. She also adds that the relationship defies the stereotypical “love at first sight” plot.

“Beast and Belle begin their love story really irritating each other and really not liking each other very much,” she said. “They build a friendship, slowly, slowly, slowly, and very slowly that builds to them having sex. They are having no illusions about who the other one is. They have seen the worst of one another, and they also bring out the best.”

Beauty and the Beast opens in theaters on March 17.
