We’re just a few days away before the highly anticipated Suicide Squid movie hits theatres and its marketing train is driving at full speed. But more of Margot Robbie is always a good thing so we’re not complaining.
This week we’ve been blessed with a couple of new sneak peaks of the sexy actress dressed up as Harley Quinn, the accomplice and lover of the Joker. So far we’ve seen plenty of pics of the entire group from Suicide Squad, but as we’re approaching the release date Harley Quinn is getting more and more solo time in the spotlight. And rightfully so, because Harley Quinn is by far the most-anticipated aspect of the upcoming film.
However, reactions on Harley’s looks have been mixed. While most fans agree that Margot Robbie is an excellent choice for the role, there’s been a lot of debate regarding her wardrobe — or better said, lack thereof.
There’s been some controversy flooding the internet over Harley Quinn’s bottomless appearance and ripped clothing, providing glimpses of her breasts and nipples and a clear view on her dyed vagina. Since the character has been traditionally depicted in a red and black bodysuit, this creative change of direction has angered diehard comic fans, who believe that her character is simply being reduced to a “sex object”.
Robbie, however, justified the wardrobe choices, saying her character is “wearing no pants because her vagina is sparkly and fun”, not because “she wanted guys to look at her ass.”
She added: “As Margot, no, I don’t like wearing that. I’m eating burgers at lunchtime, and then you go do a scene where you’re hosed down and soaking wet in a ripped T-shirt, it’s so clingy and you’re self-conscious about it.”
Director David Ayer also chimed in on the discussion, saying that he “didn’t think denim overalls would be appropriate for that character.” He added that Margot knew that this type of costume was “part of the iconography.”
Creating a faithful depiction of comic book characters still proves to be a challenging task for movie makers. A few years ago, “X-Men” fans were furious when it was revealed that one of the main characters of the X-Men movie, Wolverine, would not appear in his iconic yellow outfit for his cinematic appearance.
Costume controversy aside, most fans tend to agree that it is more important that Ayer and Robbie remain faithful to the spirit of the character. We will find out if they managed to please fans in that regard when Suicide Squad hits theatres on August 5.
